Remember April of 2016 ? It was a more innocent clip . Ted Cruz and John Kasich were still prove to be prexy , refugees were n’t yet fleeing theUS for Canada , and the bottom had n’t completely fallen out for the now - disgraced blood testing company Theranos . But that last one was just on the purview . And since Theranos was trying to gain military client I charge a FOIA request with the Air Force at the prison term to see what they knew about it .
Theranos promised to make blood tests simple-minded and leisurely . But probe by the Wall Street Journal had disclose that they did n’t quite work out the way theywere supposed to . In fact , they did n’t work at all .
So I lodge a FOIA postulation with a few branch of the war machine in April of 2016 , just as federal prosecutors were starting to reallydig into the caller , to learn what , if anything , the Air Force knew about Theranos . I just have documents today , explaining that the Air Force never severally pursued contract with Theranos . But extremity of the Pentagon ’s Joint Combat Casualty Research Team definitely calculate into it .
Why count at the military and its possible declaration with Theranos ? The Silicon Valley company fuck off a batch of hoopla for signing contracts with civilian consumer companies like Walgreens ( those declaration have since been cancelled and Walgreens is pursuinglegal action ) , but Theranos always had a bizarre connection with the US military . Behind the scenes , Theranos was trying to get its mental test in on the action .
How bizarre was this human relationship between Theranos and the US military ? General James “ Mad Dog ” Mattis , Trump ’s current Secretary of Defense , was actively pushing for Theranos trial run to be used in the field while he was dish up in the US Marines . Mattis reportedly did so in 2012 and 2013 , long before the FDA had given anything close to approval for the test . Mattis left the armed services in 2013 and joined theboard of managing director at Theranos , raising quite a few supercilium .
And despite the stonewalling that I ’ve received on FOIA requests from the Marines thus far , I just received a response from the Air Force , a full 10 month after I sent the request .
The prospicient and the short of it ? The Air Force never sought contracts with Theranos for the company ’s stock examination technology , though CENTCOM for sure did research the possibility . The Air Force Surgeon General ’s Office appears to trust that any text file that may be of interest would be held by the Defense Health Agency ( DHA ) and the Army .
From the FOIA response I experience today :
The [ Air Force ] has not perform any investigative inquiry into the fellowship Theranos or their ware , nor do we have accession to any enquiry documents that may have been bring forth by the FDA , DHA , or other governmental agencies .
We believe there have been 16 or 17 Joint Combat Casualty Research Team deployment which contained AF members / assets which did brush up the possible action of utilise Theranos and/or their products , however , these teams were Central Command ( CENTCOM ) plus rather than an AF initiative . AF / SG does not have access to any text file that may have been bring forth by these team .
Finally , we are aware of the creation of an electronic text file authored / signed by CAPT Wilkerson ( DHA ) and a white paper author / signalise by LTC Paul Mann ( Army ) which hash out Theranos in some capacity , however , we do not have written matter of those documents on hand .
So there you have it . It took 10 months , which is a snatch long for such short information , but at least it ’s something . Now I ’m off to lodge more requests with DHA and Army . I guess look for an update in another year or so .
