A squad of Icelandic archaeologists function in central Reykjavik were appear for the end of a farm bungalow build up in 1799 — so suppose their surprise when they establish a longhouse dating back to the ninth century AD instead .

Asreportedin the Iceland Monitor , the longhouse measures 65 feet ( 20 measure ) recollective and 18 foot ( 5.5 meters ) at its wide point . Its farseeing blast — the hut ’s author of heat and light — is one of the largest ever institute in Iceland , and it may have been well over 17 feet ( 5.2 meter ) in length .

The researchers have no record of any inhabitancy on that special spot other than the cottage build in 1799 , which was constructed on a featureless meadow .
The longhouse go out back to the first years of Iceland ’s settlement , a geological period from about 870 to 930 advertizement . More precise geological dating will be performed to affirm these appraisal . Excavations have only just begun , but the archaeologist have already uncovered a silver ring and a bone .
