The wide - angle sight was captured by New Horizons just 15 second after the spacecraft ’s close feeler on July 14 , 2015 . At 18,000 kilometers ( 11,000 miles ) aside , the image captures sport as small as 700 meters ( 0.4 mile ) across . Along with holding a wealth of scientific detail , it ’s utterly gorgeous and our new favorite wallpaper .
The most striking feature article is the haze encircling the little gnome satellite , with at least twelve hunky-dory layer reaching into space andthick fog sneak into cryptic valleys . Along with thepreviously - break dramatic landscapeof Sputnik Planum flanked by rugged ice mountains , now we can see silhouetted profile of landscapes on the colored side of the little world . Rough tableland overlook the nightside of Pluto , with tail cast by surface teasing the hunky-dory layers of daze .

In the screen background , faint streaks mark star blurred by the spacecraft ’s television camera move around to track Pluto during the gamy - speed skirmish .
