It ’s a film thatblends two popular genresto create a scenario and world that are fascinating and terrifying , and you instantly want to acquire more about them . alas , all of that is patter around the edges of a poorly severalise level .
Directed by David Yarovesky , produced by James Gunn , and written by Brian and Mark Gunn ( crony and full cousin to James , severally ) , Brightburn is the kind of motion picture everyone aver they need these days . A high - concept , original idea that demand more interrogation than it answers and is destined to trip conversation when you walk out the theater . A film that takes a intimate report , flips it on its head , andputs it in an unfamiliar genre . All of which sounds great in construct .

But the Gunns decide to tell that through the horror genre , which feels rather groundbreaking and works incredibly well . As Brandon begins to observe what he can do and get more ambitious with his prey , he makes prey of his victims . He stalk them , sets them up , and almost dives into their individual psychologies before earn the kill — which is suitably scary and incredibly gory . Yarovesky use all the magic of the repulsion movie trade to chuff these scene up , go for to make you jump out of your seat or writhe in it , whether that ’s with a well - timed jumping panic attack or a character lento removing a opus of glass from their eyeball .
While this all works conceptually , the carrying out is painfully lacking . Brightburn drags its story out to an almost infuriating degree . Exposition is dribbled out like a come together off spigot . panic attack scenes go on several minutes too long , as if they are just trying to fill prison term . character reference throughout are needlessly dumb just to keep the mystery story going . So you end up watch the film as a passive perceiver instead of a more active participant . Sure , there ’s playfulness to be had in simply catch the report unfold , but without an worked up adhesion to the character , it ’s gentle for a circumstances of it to feel inconsequent .
Still , though much of Brightburn ’s story is clunky , the payoffs and reveals are rather substantial . Yarovesky ’s taste for gore is terrifying in its own right and some of the choices characters make , specially late in the flick , come near to redeeming their other amentia . Dunn plays Brandon not as straight shuddery , but more with an “ Aw shucks , who me ? ” attitude , which is almost creepier at times . Banks and Denman wreak “ We happen an alien baby in the woods , permit ’s just sham we assume him ” parent with everything turned up a nick . Both are well aware they ’re make a supervillain revulsion movie and tailor their performances to the schlock consequently .
If Gunn had directed Brightburn instead of Yarovesky , you get the sense a more seasoned cutaneous senses would have made it all work a little better . Alas , Brightburn is a competent movie craft out of unbelievable ideas . It ’s gross , interesting , scary , and has fascinating mythology , all of which would be so much better if nearly all of it was n’t return in such an obtuse way . Still , this is a write up deserving assure with characters we ’d love to see again . Maybe next time , though , with a turn more care taken as to how the story is presented .
