Over at the Atlantic , there ’s a fascinating audience with Tim Maudlin , one of the founders of a new field , the doctrine of cosmology . He suggests that the mystery story of the universe , including what subsist before the Big Bang , may be in part philosophical :

One coarse scheme for thinking about this is to suggest that what we used to call the whole universe is just a small part of everything there is , and that we live in a kind of bubble existence , a small region of something much larger . And the get-go of this region , what we call the big bang , came about by some physical summons , from something before it , and that we fall out to find ourselves in this area because this is a region that can support lifetime . The idea being that there are flock of these bubble universes , maybe an infinite number of bubble universes , all very dissimilar from one another . Part of the account of what ’s forebode the anthropic precept allege , “ Well now , if that ’s the display case , we as living beings will certainly find ourselves in one of those bubbles that happens to support last existence . ” That gives you a kind of story for why the macrocosm we see around us has certain properties .
