Despite what the ads show you , Cargo is not your distinctive infinite - station horror picture . It ’s Switzerland ’s first large scale science fable photographic film , and it ’s one that showcases enough smarting and acquisition that it ranks among scifi cinema ’s estimable .
load is a much grander body of work than the Alien ringer it looks like in trailers , conflate authoritative scifi melodic theme about the portion of humanity with massive visual scope and confident direction from first - time feature director Ivan Engler and Ralph Etter .

In all honestly I was completely take aback when the first act of Cargo started to play . I lie with Engler ’s budget was a simple fraction of what Neil Blompkamp had for District 9 and even less than Duncan Jones had for Moon , so where were all these monolithic Blade Runner by way of life of gum anime nip come up from ? I expected the film to be pelt with the left over establishing shooter here and there to give the illusion of scope beyond the framing , but in Cargo epic dead reckoning keep coming and coming and come . And just when you think the film ca n’t get any larger , Engler and Etter arrange their entire 15 second climax in blank space , outside a HUGE place station . And the VFX shots are truly stupefying , competing with anything coming out of Hollywood . you could see the yield bunch ’s sleepless night up on the projection screen and it is this kind of cobwebby aspiration that makes Cargo such a rewarding viewing experience .
So , if Cargo is n’t a goliath moving picture , or really even a repugnance picture show , then what ’s it all about ? It feels more like a mystery story than a directly up thriller . There are certainly moments of eery suspense and a duo of becoming action meter , but it never truly sweep over into “ scary movie ” district . Some watcher might consider this a flaw in the picture , but I intend the Cargo crew would rather have this film lumped into the “ smart scifi ” genre and so the pic plays more like Blade Runner , Solaris , Soylent Green , Moon or Sunshine than Event Horizon or Alien .
fundamentally , the human race is in a bad mode . The earthly concern is decease and quickly becoming uninhabitable . Massive outer space stations the size of it of multiple city are orbiting the earth , but even these ca n’t accommodate earth ’s refugees . Disease , pollution and a new terrorist chemical group is quickly making life on the station unbearable .

Those lucky enough to be plentiful or win the travel lottery , are able-bodied to find passage to RHEA , a new colony set up on another planet . Otherwise infinite traveling is just too prospicient and too expensive for everyone to go . No “ light swiftness ” here , kinsfolk .
Enter Cargo ’s champion , Laura Portmann ( Anna - Katharina Schwabroh ) , a doctor who takes a locating on an eight - year load mission delivering building materials to the unmanned “ Station 42 ” to make enough money to go to RHEA and reunite with her sister . Most of her time on the mission will be spent in cryosleep , but each crew phallus is required to spend a sure amount of meter awake to check that the piece of crap ship stay together during the mission .
Three and a half years into the mission it is Laura ’s turn to live alone on the freaky space freighter and weird clobber starts happening . finally there is a malfunction in the load grasp and Laura wakes the other members up to look into . When they actualize that the malfunction was sabotage , they begin to distinguish that their cargo is part of a major conspiracy to operate the human population by whatever means necessary ( do n’t occupy , Soylent Green is n’t multitude here , gang ) and that someone is willing to kill to keep it hidden .

freight is a classic dystopian heroic poem . It pinpoint the flavor and feel of a world that ’s falling apart at the seams . It ’s certainly gritty and naturalistic . The ship is a piece of crap where stuff ’s always break down . Space locomotion is long , boring , expensive and hella cold and the gang loves to complain about it . In fact it ’s so cold that there ’s even C in the the cargo hold .
Technology in the Cargo world seems to be extremely advanced , and we see a mess of gadgets and body manipulation throughout the photographic film . Unlike other scifi films which tend to colour over the issue of light years , Cargo give us Platonism : Even though you may send electronic messages to other station or planet , it lease years to get a message in return .
At the inwardness of the film is the ship ’s lading hanger , so expectant it ’s like another man – metallic and deadly – where “ rail do n’t exist ” ( a space opera pre - requisite once uttered by George Lucas ) . Entering the hanger is stringently disallow and when the crew goes in you may see why . It ’s pretty darn treacherous making your way of life through the maze of move sign - sized container . Two of the film ’s most unique sequences take plaza in the hanger and the carrying into action is just corking .

I wanted to check that to mention the film ’s score , because it ’s Fredrik Strömberg ’s first time out of the logic gate and it ’s merely astonishing . Haunting , beautiful and sumptuous , it marries the film ’s visuals and really elevates Cargo to a Greco-Roman status .
But of course , as no film is perfect … I ’ve seen Cargo three times now and despite how much I love the film for it ’s tale , acting , production design , music and cinematography , I think that Engler and Etter could have cranked up the horror factor a snatch to give the flick a more immediate sense of peril . There are a distich of kills in the film , but because they occur tight and you see none of the violence you do n’t feel the threat level rise as much as you should .
That said , I know Engler write a few drafts of the film . One was much more violent , but it was toned down in favour of place accent on the film ’s scifi elements . Since Cargo is n’t meant to be a repugnance picture show I can see the logical system , but still , a lilliputian more of the ol’ ultra - wildness to turn the screws a fiddling would have made the experience that much more piquant .

Despite this minor quibble , I opine Cargo is prim to stun viewer who wo n’t be expecting its unequaled narrative , surefooted direction and striking visuals . I certainly was n’t .
The motion-picture show is definitely in the same conference as any of the previous scifi picture we ’ve been loving like Moon or Sleep Dealer and I hope everyone get a opportunity to see it .
Cargo was release this year in Europe , and played at the SXSW pic fete in the U.S. this month . No word on when we ’ll be able to get it in the U.S.
