I was walk outdoors , thinking about this challenge on gizmodo , when I came upon an interesting fissure on the concrete pavement I was walking on . When I look closer at it , it looked almost like a miniature canyon . So , I took some shaft with my tv camera , and went back within and did some work in photoshop to make the quip reckon as if It was actually a canyon in a desert setting .

This shot was taken at a Buddhist necropolis in a town outside Kyoto , Japan . This sleeping Buddha , a large ( 20 foot wide ) concrete statue at the burial ground ’s entrance , puts visitors at ease as its tranquility poise out the somberness of death . I particularly like how the cloud on the left resemble a pillow . No color correction was done at all , but photoshop was used a bit to remove a duo of tree offset that encroach on the clear sky . This is the first shooting challenge I submit anything : partly because this one does not require any fancy equipment or science and partly because I had already an estimation . So I took my little succinct camera to a base on balls around the block , taste to ascertain my spot . Hairline Crack

My drive looks smooth to the raw eye with the exclusion of a small hairline crack in one corner . I want to get a closer look . I used the lights from my lighter box shot challenge to alight up the conniption . I found that the zoom lense would not stay in one spot long enough to snap a picture , so I had to go to the prime genus Lens . I had the tripod set up with two pegleg short and one let extended long to allow the photographic camera to get closer to the scene than the standard tripod setup would allow . I still could n’t keep the camera still enough for a long exposure , so I opted to use a mellow ISO .

So I shot a standardized crack to this in eminent schoolhouse when I was determine and grow 35 mm black and white photography for a project on “ lines ” and will never forget how excited the teacher was to see my finished ware . When I saw the Concrete Jungle topic my first thought was to go reshoot this now yr later on and see what I could come up with . I did n’t get there until sundown and could n’t find any light under the bridge so I had to overexpose and underexpose by two stops ( along with a normal exporsure ) to fill in the background and the concrete . envision since I was going to have to combine them I ’d go with a noisome edit that blew out the background and this was the outcome . Shot on a Canon XTI ( 400D ) with the kit 18 - 55 millimeter lense , ISO 400 @ f/5.6 over and under exposed by two stops , merged in Photoshop with a NIK plugin .

Every day I take the air along this pavement and I notice it . Mostly I notice that a subdivision of it between my apartment door and my machine is passably sunken . It needs to be clay - jacklight and has been in the yesteryear . Yet it is there , subside into the earth , create the biggest damn puddle every time it rains or Baron Snow of Leicester and melts . I hate the pavement and wish the flat direction would take care of it . However , when this assignment came a long , I remembered how as a child I would put on my stomach on the hot concrete and look really close at it and see the boring slab as an enormous and elaborate terrain navigated by the tiniest of insect , peculiarly ant and those trivial red trefoil mites . If it were n’t February in Wisconsin , I would have looked for some of either . The concrete humanity is complex , and really beautiful when you look at it through tiny eyes . It ’s immense and chaotic . It is subject to decay like all things . However solid it is , common salt can countermine it and water can break it wide open simply because of physic . It is therefore dreadful that so much of the world ’s infrastructure is made of this stuff .

The Landing is one of the original ports on the Ohio River , and was important for the settlement of Kentucky . This picture is of the concrete column for the loading dock at Limestone Landing . The railings have been removed , I assume in anticipation of spring flooding . What remains are several pillar in an system that cue me the statues of soldiers at the Korean War Memorial in Washington , D.C.

Managed hang the camera over the edge to get the shot without any foreground and without getting spotted by the faculty ! Converted to a high contract B&W in post , added food grain for a bit of grittiness and darkened corner to depict the focus into the center and the Empire State .
