A few months afterNia DaCostaofficially signed on to direct the newCandyman — which has gone on to becomethe first moving-picture show target by a Black womanto premiere at the top of the box office — the director happened to bump into New York Times editorialist and illustrator Julia Rothman , who was randomly interview people on the street abouttheir kinship to debt .
While those not intimate with DaCosta ’s earlier employment like Little Woods might not have recognized her name at the meter , what she say about her $ 100,000 student loanword debt resonated with many who could relate to living with the constant accent of take to pay off back that much money ( plus sake ) . In ordering to free herself of that kind of stress , DaCosta reasoned in 2019 , she ’d need to land a massive , Avengers - level directing gig , which would give up her to “ pay it all in one fell swoop . ”
Then , in 2020 , news show broke thatDaCosta was place to directMarvel Studios ’ Captain Marvel subsequence , The Marvels .

Like any gamey - profile celebrity with respectable sentience who suddenly detect themselves thrust into the public spotlight in a major way , DaCosta quietly left societal media not long after The Marvels news begin making the daily round , and much of the buzz about her since her been concentre on Candyman ’s box berth success . But during a recent show on the Blank Check podcast DaCosta verbalise a bit about how booking The Marvels changed her life , and she explained how , hyped as she is to be working on the moving picture , the project did not as if by magic erase the kind of fiscal burden she was talking about in the Times .

“ I was like , I will only devote them off if I get a Marvel movie , and now that I have one , I ’m like ‘ Jesus , I ’m still not going to [ be able-bodied to ] pay them all off , ’ ” DaCosta said . “ Everyone guess I literally paid them off like when I got the job , which is not how you get paid through the [ Directors Guild of America ] . ”
To that end , DaCosta also expressed how quick she was ( this installment of Blank Check was recorded some time ago ) to finally plunk into The Marvels ’ production . “ aboveboard , I ’ve been prepping for 10 months , and we just postulate to start shooting , ” DaCosta said . “ There ’s only so much you may prep a motion picture , even one as big as this , and I ’m just like ‘ lease ’s go . Let ’s do it . ’ ”
Candyman is in theaters now , and The Marvels hits theaters on November 11 , 2022 .

Correction 2025-02-04 , 9:45 a.m. ET : An earlier version of the post incorrectly call Blank Check a part of the Audioboom connection , which it recently left to be run independently . We regret the error .
