Strange Magic is n’t a movie , it ’s more of an Three Kings' Day George Lucas had between laps in his Scrooge McDuck vault of money . “ What if I grease one’s palms the rights to every pop song ever and put them all in one movie ? But what about a plot ? Fuck it , I ’ll just make it anyway . ” That is the motion picture Strange Magic .
There is no other logical explanation for why the film Strange Magic be . Without the backing of Lucas bucks there is absolutely no mode anyone would have given this picture show the greenlight . think the slant :
“ The movie begins inside a fantastic woodland world . The creatures who hold out in this elaborately constructed magical land admit waif - ish , lollipop - headed fagot with expressionless faces , elves , hob , imps , insect people , lizards , frog - headed creatures with human - comparable distaff torsos , and a Bog King . All the animal have hugely different accent . It should be endlessly confounding where these timberland creatures derive Scotch , Russian and fake Southern American accents from . A big businessman hungry fairy ( Roland ) is engaged to the queer princess ( Marianne ) , but on their wedding Clarence Shepard Day Jr. Marianne catches her betrothed make out with another queen ( no , really , they will be full on , CG make out ) . The two split , Marianne becomes bitter . Meanwhile the baby to the fairy princess ( Dawn ) reckon for passion , while overleap her honorable ally , an pixie named Sunny . How do Sunny and Roland contend with their unanswered love ? They conspire to make a honey potion that will force the two female fairies to fall in love with them . It ’s terrible , yes , we know , but that ’s why they ’re bad guy wire . Well , only one of them is a bad bozo , but that ’s neither here nor …
Oh ! I wholly leave the best part — every character will periodically and needlessly burst into song every 10 sec . It will make no sensory faculty at all and the transitions will be completely precipitous and surprisingly tone of voice deaf . The only warning will be the occasional melodic cue stick from a nonexistent electrical guitar , like in the Rent movie ( not the gambol ) . And despite not having access to human culture , these woodland creatures will only sing Top 40 pop songs and classic rock music jams from the human world . There will be no signs of humanness in this universe , but all the character will cognize all the words to the total ELO musical library .
And most importantly , we must all neglect to market the fact that 99.9 % of this movie is spent in song .
There is NO WAY that movie gets made . That being said , I ’m really glad it was , because watching Strange Magic was possibly the most surreal , unexpected thing I ’ve ever experienced . I did n’t dislike it , but it ’s not a good film . Not at all . However , if I was a parent who has developed a gag instinctive reflex to all things Frozen , I could see welcome the sweet relief of karaoke versions of another band ’s greatness into my minivan .
But before you pack up the kiddies or a great adult bong , there are some things you demand to know about Strange Magic before seeing it . coddler !
I was mindful that the fairies sing familiar birdcall in this movie before go in . But no one discourage me to the sheer size of cheeseball tattle prank these creatures would be up to . For example :

That is about as delicate as this picture show gets with song transitions . After awhile I was almost craning to hear the next euphony cue . The picture show has no pity , and that ’s probably the good part about it . They even cut to split - sieve sing - offs when one character and another are duet - ing from unlike character of the forest . It ’s ridiculous but also great .
And that ’s not to say the music was n’t used in cunning ways . In one example , the fairy army marches along to the “ rah rah rah rah raaah ” chant from Lady GaGa ’s “ Bad Romance . ” They never actually sing this song , the US Army only expend the “ rah rahs . ” That was pretty clever and great and in all probability continuously expensive .
Keep your eye peeled for the super obvious Star Wars protection .
After main character Marianne is cheated on , she has her “ fuck love life I ’m going tyke ” mo and trades her wedding dress for some leather wristband and black eye makeup ( that her fairy servants put on ) . It ’s hilarious . I was like , yeah , go get them , Bratz wench creature , you do you . But then later both female leads find felicity by take on a man and falling in beloved . The report of this movie is “ everyone merit love no matter who they are , ” and I make love this because the King Fairy grapheme in reality steps into a tantrum and says , “ the lesson I learn today is that everyone deserves to be love no matter who they are , ” NO LIE . But that form of come to me as shit dogshit . I did n’t need the persona to be figure out by Man . It ’s lazy , but this movie is slothful . alternatively of writing genuine short letter of dialogue they just cue up “ Wild Thing ” and rent the CG monsters let the cat out of the bag about their unexampled obtain dear because hell , they already paid for the rights .
But everyone is haunt with love and get tie , it ’s a immense part of the plot . It ’s so important that Maya Rudolph actually plays the Bog King ’s goblin female parent who go around asking , “ WHEN IS MY SON go TO GET MAWIED ? ? ? ”
The aforesaid Fairy King who steps out and tells everyone the message IS George Lucas and no one can convince me that he ’s not . Also , moments after confessing his fresh learned example , he go out his immature queen girl Dawn ( spoiler ! ) kissing Sunny the elf and eliminate out from … Elf Racism ? I do n’t know .
Overall it just felt like George Lucas made a Spotify play list and handed it off to a bunch of really gifted creature creators and BOOM , Strange Magic . Take your child if you ’re unhinged of Frozen .
