In Vernor Vinge ’s novel Rainbows End , the writer imagines a near futurity where everybody wears computers knitted into their clothing , which are tie in to augmented reality contact crystalline lens or glasses . Everybody looks at the macrocosm through a layer of data , whether that ’s just social selective information about the mass they ’re talking to , or a full - blown MMO overlay that turn their college campus into a gothic Greenwich Village . People use these AR goggles to do everything from research to gaming ; Vinge suppose AR as a engineering that can pull the web into the genuine earthly concern .
Now , Google is going to do exactly what Vinge predicted . Over at the New York Times , Nick Bilton report on a Google X project that could put AR glasses on your fount in less than a year , for roughly the cost of a fresh sound . Bilton writes :
The glass will have a low - resolution built - in television camera that will be able-bodied to supervise the public in real meter and overlay information about locating , skirt building and friends who might be nearby , according to the Google employees . The glasses are not designed to be wear upon constantly – although Google expects some of the nerdiest users will wear them a lot – but will be more like smartphones , used when needed .

Internally , the Google X team has been actively discussing the privateness entailment of the glasses and the company want to control that masses make out if they are being recorded by someone wearing a couplet of glasses with a build - in television camera .
The labor is currently being build up in the Google X federal agency , a secretive laboratory near Google ’s main campus that is charged with work on robots , quad elevator and loads of other futuristic projects .
Wait — Google is building a quad lift too ? I hope it ’s going to be something I can see even when I take my AR goggles off .
