Wired has a really interesting story on the pre - Droid days of Android . If you remember back in 2009 , Android was scarce the big actor it is now . TheG1was nice , themyTouch 3Gwas a slight improvement andthe Herowas a step in the right centering but it needed something unlike , something that would draw a line in the sand and say we ’re not the iPhone and we do n’t need to be . Something that would become the Droid .

But even more than Android need a hit to legitimize itself , Motorola needed a grand jibe to get itself out of its post RAZR muddle . Motorola cleverly team up with an iPhone - less Verizon to create an eventual dynamical yoke . But everything needed to be sodding ! The name Motorola was going with internally with their earpiece — shallow — didn’t quite do it for Verizon so Verizon reached out to McGarry Bowen , a young ad government agency , for help . pumped reports :

“ We told them they had a week , ” say someone who was affect in the discussions . “ A few daylight later , [ they ] come back and says , ‘ What do you intend when I say Droid ? ”

In retrospect , what the government agency had done was unproblematic : It turned the earphone ’s menacing looks into its biggest asset by marketing it as an anti - iPhone . The iPhone was smooth and tasteful , so they would tilt the Droid as uncut and quick for work . The iPhone ’s electronics and software were inaccessible , so they ’d commercialize the earpiece ’s hackability . “ If there had been a phone in the movie Black Hawk Down , it would have looked like the Droid . ”

I loved the Droid because of just that . It encompass what it was . prominent , black , beautiful and not the iPhone . Of course it did n’t hurt that it was a great sound with a fast mainframe , super nappy filmdom and running a maturing Android 2.0 but it was a sheer move by Motorola to swing for the fences and a genius move by Verizon to lock up an iPhone competitor ( that would ironically help down them the iPhone in the future tense ) .

It ’s sorta laughable to look back at the harsh marketing of the Droid — from the commercial spots , to the name , to the earpiece itself — and see that as the tipping compass point of when little humanoid became Android . But it ’s on-key ! It was the phone and name that changed the game for Android ( of class the Nexus One coming after did n’t suffer either ) . translate the whole report , with some great stories about Andy Rubin and Google working with Motorola , atWired .
