Rumer Willisis opening up about one of her first big challenges in parenting.

On Thursday, the new mom, 35, posted a Reel on Instagram opening up about her experience caring for daughterLouetta, 5 months, as she battled the flu — at the same time as Willis and boyfriendDerek Richard Thomas, 28.

“So, sharing a little bit today, but I wanted to go a little bit more in-depth. Louetta and I, as well as her dad, actually got really sick recently. And we’re all hit pretty hard with a flu and what was incredible was it was the first time, I would say as a mother, that I truly had that moment of going, ‘Wow, how am I going to take care of myself? And take care of her,'” she shared.

Noting that she didn’t call in reinforcements from her family because they were “out of town and I didn’t want to get any of them sick even if they had been here,” Rumer said it was “this moment where it was almost healing in this way of being able to look at all of those times in the past, where maybe, anxiety, or panic or something has come up. And allowing myself to really see what I was capable of because I was also really trying to let her body fight whatever it was fighting.”

Willis went on to explain that while she wasn’t medicating her daughter, she was still nervous about her spiking fevers.

“Thankfully, it was only really one bad evening, but I was sitting there, I think it was maybe midnight and I’m holding her in the bath. I remember this moment of just feeling like I’m her whole world. I am her safe place. And I’m who she’s going to call whenever she doesn’t feel good, just like I still call my mother,” she shared.

In trying to “cultivate the confidence within myself to be able to create that safety for her, to be able to be that person for her,” Willis discovered asking for help was a crucial piece.

“I think it’s unbelievably important that we create community, and we allow ourselves the space to ask for that help.”
